Toys That are Fun and Safe for Children

Advent has begun and, along with the spiritual preparation of our hearts for the Nativity, the shopping to give gifts to loved ones is well underway. Of course, when purchasing gifts for kids, we’re looking for items that are not only fun, but also safe.

While kids getting into scrapes (with or without toys!) can be unavoidable at times, there are some precautions we can take to be sure that our gifts are not hazardous.

Did you know that any toy after 1995 made in or imported to the U.S. must be approved by the U.S. Consumer Safety Protection Commission? Here are a few things to keep in mind during your Christmas shopping:

  • Watch out for used toys, as it may be unclear whether or not the toy is safe or has ever been recalled

  • Fabric-based toys should be labeled as flame retardant

  • Stuffed animals should be washable!

  • Art supplies and similar materials should be marked as non-toxic

  • Check the noise level of toys—if it’s louder than a car horn, it could damage your child’s hearing

  • Be sure that toys are age-appropriate. For example, toddlers and babies should never have access to items that are choking hazards

Good luck with your shopping during this busy season and God bless your Advent!
