Spreading the Good News

We have much to celebrate at Pentecost when we remember the early days of the Church and the courage that the Blessed Mother and the Disciples embodied as they set out to spread the Good News empowered to them by Jesus. Those early days must have been most difficult. The arrest, torture and crucifixion were not far in the rearview mirror and fear must have been most operative in the minds of the disciples as they faced people who doubted them and their message.

God's powerful Holy Spirit set aflame to their hearts, however, and they were fully charged and ready to go forth making disciples of every person they encountered. We know from the Scriptures that this wasn't always possible. Jesus taught the Disciples to shake the dust from their feet and move to another place when the word of God fell on deaf ears. Nonetheless, they forged ahead putting the Christian message forward for all to encounter.

This Pentecost, it might be nice to pick just one of the practices below and celebrate the season by making Christ's love known. You may never see the total effects of your efforts, but the power of God's hand working through you will be tremendous.

  • When you encounter a conversation where there is prejudice, gently offer the Christian message—all are loved by God equally.
  • When you are affronted by a rude sales person, "turn the other cheek" and return a message of peace and acceptance.
  • When the opportunity arises for you to step forward to help someone, do so graciously.
  • When a family or friend presents you with difficult news, let them know how our Faith assists you in handling challenging life situations.
  • As the saying goes, "Preach the Gospel, and sometimes use words." Teach by example.
  • Be happy. Show joy. Be enthusiastic. Show others by your life's example that the journey of life is a blessed one marked by celebration.
  • The old song had it right: "They'll now we are Christians by our Love!"
