Firework Safety Tips

Many summers are not complete without gazing at a sky full of fireworks. And while many enjoy breaking out the sparklers and setting off their own fireworks, a little caution can go a long way in preventing injuries.

Each summer, hospitals across the country see firecracker-related injuries ranging from burns or being struck by object. In more extreme cases, these injuries have resulted in blindness and even death.

Norton healthcare shares a few pointers worth considering, especially if you are thinking about using firecrackers and sparklers around children. They recommend that:

  • Only adults should handle fireworks
  • Safety procedures should be discussed with children ahead of time, such as what to do if their clothes catch fire ("Stop, drop and roll")
  • Instructions be followed, particularly keeping body parts and clothing away from the firework's trajectory
  • Spectators stay a good distance away from where the fireworks are being lighted

Including fireworks in your July 4th celebrations can provide some great memories. Just be sure everyone remembers to follow the same precautions they would around any other sort of fire or explosions.
