Saint Joseph

What a model you are for all father figures, good Saint Joseph. Silent, strong, supporting, ever present, ever comforting and ever providing, Saint Joseph. What would we do without you? "In every age, you have been our refuge" [Psalm 90:1]. From your first yes to Mary, your presence changed the world for her and your son, Jesus, forever. As foster father to Jesus, your strength and love propelled His spirit. You showed Mary a love that surpasses all, and you made for us the perfect example of a holy family filled with all that was good and a love to teach the ages.

In this world filled with children starving for the affection of a father-figure who will care for, protect, love and nurture them, we need your assistance now more than ever. So many children are alone in their fears, and are hungry not only for food, but for guidance and leadership. Please fill the hearts of men to be moved to goodness and compassion so that they might step up and fulfill their obligations as fathers. And, if they are not able, please inspire other good men to step forward to do as you did by serving as a foster father or support figure. We end our prayer with words composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1889. His supplications then are our still ours today:

O most watchful guardian of the Holy Family, defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence; O our most mighty protector, be kind to us
and from heaven assist us in our struggle with the power of darkness. As once you rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now protect God's Holy Church from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity. Amen.
